Peru Initiations: A Journey of Remembering & Becoming
A life-changing climb up Huayna Picchu becomes a spiritual initiation that transforms fear into power.
The Climb I Never Chose: An Initiation on Huayna Picchu
Climbing Huayna Picchu was never part of my plan.
Be sure to check out part One of this incredible story: Part 1: Spiritual Awakening at Machu Picchu: A Soul Remembering before digging into this conclusion

If you had asked me ahead of time whether I wanted to do it, I would have said “no”—without hesitation. Heights, narrow ledges, and anything involving elevated risk have never been my comfort zone. I’ve often joked that I’m “gravitationally insecure,” but there’s truth in that. My body has always been deeply aware of danger, of edges, of the potential to fall.
And yet… everything changed the moment we arrived at Machu Picchu.
As our bus pulled in, I experienced a sudden and deeply emotional energetic download—one of those moments that bypasses logic entirely and speaks directly to the soul. It wasn’t a thought. It wasn’t a choice. It was a knowing.
I have to climb that mountain.
There was no negotiating with it. No rationalizing my way out of it. I knew, with absolute certainty, that I was being called—initiated, even—and that the only way through was up.
The Ascent: One Step Beyond Fear
I had no idea what I was in for.
There are very few photos from my climb, not because I didn’t want them, but because it simply wasn’t safe to take my camera out. The path demands your full presence. Every step matters. Every placement is intentional.
While the elevation sits around 8,000 feet, that’s not what makes Huayna Picchu formidable. It’s the near-vertical ascent, the narrow pathways, the unforgiving edges. There is very little room for error.
And I wasn’t exactly in peak physical condition.
I was climbing on a recently fractured ankle, with torn ligaments and muscles, and a stubborn patella that didn’t always track the way it should. Every step required precision. Awareness. Commitment. I had to override every logical voice in my mind that said, This isn’t safe. You shouldn’t be doing this.
Instead, I leaned into something deeper.
It took me an hour to reach the top—moving deliberately, slowly, with unwavering focus. I wasn’t rushing. I wasn’t stopping. I was simply… committed.
The Summit: Where Fear Dissolves
When I finally reached the top, I was drenched in sweat and completely exhausted.
But something unexpected happened.
I wasn’t afraid.
The edges that should have terrified me… didn’t. The exposure, the cliffs, the vastness beneath me—it all felt different. Neutral. Even inviting. At one point, I climbed out onto a rocky ledge to take a photo, something the “old me” would have never, ever done.
And I remember thinking:
Did I really just do that?

I stayed at the top for a while, letting it all settle. Taking in not just the view, but the energy of the place, the magnitude of what had just occurred within me. I knew this wasn’t just about a hike or a physical challenge.
This was something deeper.
Something ancient.
Something my soul had been preparing for long before this lifetime.
The Descent: Trusting Every Step
As powerful as the summit was, I knew the journey wasn’t over.
Getting down would require just as much presence—if not more.
With my ankle and knee, I had to move carefully. Intentionally. There were moments where the terrain offered nothing to hold onto, and I had to lower myself down on my bottom just to maintain control. My legs and glutes burned with intensity. Every muscle was engaged. Every movement was calculated.
It took another hour to descend.
An hour of trust. Of patience. Of honoring my body while continuing to move forward.
The Initiation
Looking back, I understand this experience for what it truly was.
An initiation.
This wasn’t a spontaneous decision or a random act of courage. This was something my soul had orchestrated long, long ago. Every step up that mountain unlocked something within me—something that had been waiting to be accessed, remembered, reclaimed.
And when I returned to Machu Picchu, I was not the same person who had left.
Something had shifted.
Profoundly.
The rest of my journey through Peru unfolded on an entirely new trajectory—one that I could have never predicted, but somehow had always been destined for.
Sometimes the paths we would never choose are the very ones our soul insists upon.
And when we say yes—despite the fear, despite the logic, despite the risk—we don’t just reach a summit…
We become someone new.
